Yoga...Where have you been all my life?

Hey everyone, how was your Monday?

I certainly wasn't ready to go back to work, but the day was surprising calm. We have almost everything in the office boxed up for end of year transition. Thank goodness!

If you remember my New Year, New You post from last week, there are a few things that I am happy to say I have already started chipping away at!

I am happy to report that I have cut back on the alcohol - 2 glasses in 9 day (who am I?!), and I have been enjoying my 15 minutes of reflection time every day.

Looking back at my fitness goals, I see now that they are all running related!! I do love running, but I think I need to diversify my goals a bit. Twice this past week I have had the opportunity to try yoga at a local studio called Siva Yoga Studios. The only yoga class I have ever taken was at my local Y. Not to knock that class, but my experience was so different at a studio!

On Thursday night, my friend Carri and I tried the Hot Fusion Yoga at Siva Hot Yoga Studio. From the website: HOT FUSION  Ashtanga, which means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit, is a fast-paced, intense style of yoga. A set series of poses is performed, always in the same order. Ashtanga practice is very physically demanding because of the constant movement from one pose to the next. In yoga terminology, this movement is called flow. Ashtanga is also the inspiration for what is often called Power Yoga. If a class is described as Power Yoga, it will be based on the flowing style of Ashtanga, but not necessarily keep strictly to the set Ashtanga series of poses.

I loved this class! It wasn't as hot as a normal bikram class, but it was warm enough to allow me to get a really deep stretch. I felt very comfortable in the class setting, and everyone was very welcoming.

On Saturday morning, my friend Arielle and I had the chance to attend the flow class at Siva Power Yoga studio. From the website: FLOW/POWER Like Hatha, Vinyasa is a general term that is used to describe many different types of classes. Vinyasa, which means breath-synchronized movement, tends to be a more vigorous style based on the performance of a series of poses called Sun Salutations, in which movement is matched to the breath. A Vinyasa class will typically start with a number of Sun Salutations to warm up the body for more intense stretching that's done at the end of class.

I loved this class as well. I was challenged at times, but also felt like I had enough time to slow down and enjoy the stretches. I can honestly say that I will be back to both classes and I cannot wait to try the power class!

Have you ever tried yoga?

  3. @Cait It is definitely hard to find time with all the other fitness goals I am trying to accomplish, but I know that yoga will make me a better runner! Worth it!

  4. @cherierunsthis.com I am very obsessed! I can already tell that it would just be better to get the unlimited month pass rather than paying for each class!

  5. Tried it and love it! I go to a yoga class once a week, and I *try* to do some yoga-esque poses on my own during the rest of the week, mostly to build core muscle. My only complaint is that the gym where these classes are held keeps their thermostat set to ridiculously cool, which is ok if you're on the cardio machines, but not cool for yoga. But I love this particular yoga teacher, so it's worth it!

  6. @melinda That would be bad! I get super hot during yoga, but to be too cold would drive me crazy!!

  8. I love yoga! Until recently I hadn't rolled out my mat in about 10 years. Seriously, where did those 10 years go? I had to actually count out how many years it had been since I last took a class and was shocked--didn't feel that long. Anyway, I really enjoy. It makes me so relaxed and just feelin' good! I only take one class a week right now, and it's a basics class since I'm so out of practice, but I hope to include another during the week as time goes along. So glad you enjoy it! Now, just make sure you have an awesome mat and don't slide around like I didn't way back when. HAHA
